A TRANS feat. Judith Saupper | Porträt einer Landschaft (Portrait of A Landscape)
Vernissage: Samstag 3. Dezember 2016, 16 – 19 Uhr
The annual theme A Private City by A trans is designed to focus with greater precision on the idea of the public and private. These terms are mutually interdependent, yet their margins remain perpetually indistinct, never becoming fixed or static. The character of public space is undergoing constant change, while private realms are becoming more differentiated spatially. In this series of exhibitions, invited protagonists will interrogate, fathom, and redefine the relationship between public and private.
On view at the turn of the year will be the project Portrait of a Landscape by the Vienna-based artist Judith Saupper. This installation is subdivided into multiple scenarios and deals with the representation of catastrophes and our perceptions of them, whether publicly or privately, externally or internally.
But the events she deals with are not displayed in the original; the issue of deception (the fake) also plays an essential role. But these „fakes“ are not staged solely in the spirit of deliberate deception. In general, deceit also occurs unconsciously, in personal memory, so that the gambits „I’m no longer certain“ and „I think that’s what happened“ play themselves out constantly in our minds. They generate continuous deception, allowing us to become passive, to dwell in the private sphere, remaining, in the words of Hanna Arendt, „apolitical and inactive.“
This installation – composed of drawings, photographs, objects, models, and sound collages – provides viewers with numerous items of evidence that will allow them to find their own paths back toward the public sphere.
