Papay Gyro Nights Art Festival has originated from the folklore, traditions and landscape of Papay – a small and remote island in the North Atlantic and taking place around the first full Moon of February

Since 2011 Papay Gyro Nights had 6 edition in Papay, 5 editions in Hong Kong and touring and exchange programmes in Europe, which are generating artists and ideas exchange, new works production and art archive and collection

This year Papay Gyro Nights are launching nomad’s museum – a journey to present Gyro Nights collection, to meet new artists and art project to create new collaborations for the future

“Normierung” und “Kontrolle” sind zwei Schlüsselbegriffe für diesen Salon. Die Künstler Ralf Baecker, Sebastian Schmieg und Jennifer Lyn Morone beschäftigen sich auf unterschiedliche Weise mit “Körpern”. Der (Daten-)Körper und seine Verwertbarkeit steht im Mittelpunkt der Beschäftigung von Jennifer Lyn Morone, während Ralf Baecker poetische Maschinen erschafft, die sich selbst zu optimieren suchen. Sebastian Schmieg hingegen macht Prozesse der Datensammlung und algorithmische Absurditäten sichtbar. Zu sehen und hören gibt es Artist-Talks mit den Künstlerinnen und Filme.

A snake in a jar is the only personal object L. is carrying with her on her odyssey through the deserts of Nevada, Texas, Ohio and Utah. Childhood memories, letters and other small souvenirs guide her steps through a landscape that is quite literally littered with objects, fragments of discourses and echoes of other stories from the old continent. Somewhere, beneath all the stories, there is another story that asks to be told. And let us not forget talking animals and handbags!
Adopting the strategy of sampling and collaging, the director creates a world where people are ghosts filled with space and stories. Eschewing all forms of traditional storytelling and known cinematic genres, Luci Lux creates a puzzling and fascinating visual maelstrom that works at the same time as experimental documentary and as a piece of „musique concréte“ made for visual hearing. Composed of memories, photos, Super-8 snippets, Youtube and Video-snippets. This film is a visual free-jazz flow of stream-of-consciousness images that questions our habits related to storytelling.

Den Männern und Frauen des letzten Versuchs einer bewaffneten sozialistischen Revolution in Deutschland zuzuhören, ist Anliegen des Films Der Hamburger Aufstand 1923 (Klaus Wildenhahn, Gisela Tuchtenhagen, Reiner Etz, BRD 1971), der die Reihe eröffnet. Die dreiteilige, an der dffb entstandene „Wochenschau“ vermittelt den Klassenkampf als alltägliche Erfahrung: Hunger, Streik, Gefängnis, Konzentrationslager.

Kuratiert von Florian Wüst. Ein Projekt des HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Kooperation mit dem Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst. Gefördert durch die Kulturstiftung des Bundes im Rahmen von „Die Ästhetik des Widerstands – Peter Weiss 100“, ein Festival des HAU Hebbel am Ufer.

Das filmische Werk des Künstlers, Schriftstellers und Bühnenautors Peter Weiss, der im November hundert Jahre alt geworden wäre, markiert den Übergang von einer surrealistisch geprägten Innensicht zur Auseinandersetzung mit der sozialen Wirklichkeit in der geteilten Welt des Kalten Krieges. In der akribischen Arbeit mit Fakten und Dokumenten entwirft Weiss kein geschlossenes Geschichtsbild, vielmehr bleibt das Handeln seiner Figuren von individuellen Standpunkten und Widersprüchen durchzogen. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich die Filmreihe dem Verhältnis von ästhetischer und politischer Subjektivität in Bezug auf Unterdrückung und Ungleichheit, Widerstand und gesellschaftliche Veränderung.

Sonic adventures in the land of textural distortions, microtonal manipulations, meandering sound walls, and other ear curiosities introduced by Sam Hertz, composer and sound artist and artist and curator in residence!

Douglas-Moore lays out sound walls using guitar-created sine tones, feedback, and a deliberate approach to sonic layering while Roth inlays his electronics influenced approach to the alto saxophone, ducking in and out of the sound space with microtonal manipulations, multiphonics, drones, and other noise gestures, sometimes to reinforce the overall texture, other times to destroy it. the result is a continuous sound field that seems to evolve slowly but at the same time constantly reworks itself through subtle turns, hints, and premonitions from two sound artists keen on manipulating sonic space. Samuel Hertz, composer and performer, received his MFA at Mills College, where he studied composition and electronic music with Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, and Zeena Parkins. He continually collaborates with numerous dance companies and performers throughout the United States, and his work has been seen/heard at ACUD MACHT NEU (Berlin, Germany), Bains::Connective (Brussels, Belgium), Apiary Studios (London, UK), Center for New Music (San Francisco, CA), Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley, CA), Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (San Francisco, CA), ACRE-TV (Chicago, IL), Jack Straw New Media Gallery (Seattle, WA), Harvestworks (New York, NY), The Uncreativity Festival (Minneapolis, MN), and WBEZ Radio (Chicago, IL), among others. Samuel has worked as lead technical assistant to, and performed with Morton Subotnick, Alvin Curran, and John Driscoll. He will be in residence at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm, Sweden in late June. Samuel is currently part of two working groups as an artist-researcher for the Anthropocene Curriculum in association with Haus der Kulturen der Welt/Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin, Germany), and his work is released on the Nebularosa record label (London, UK). ‚In den Kehlen von Bäumen‘ ist eine Soundinstallation, begleitet von einem Booklet mit Höranleitungen. Die Soundinstallation erforscht die „Stimmen“ von Bäumen. Die Komposition besteht aus Aufnahmen, in denen die Künstlerin zu dem Sound von Wind durch die Äste von fünf Baumarten vokalisiert – Lärche, Birke, Föhre, Fichte, Ahorn – einen dunklen Wald von Sounds erzeugend.

Die Höranleitungen laden das Publikum ein, als Bäume zu hören. Bäume funktionieren in einem ganz anderen Zeit- und Bewegungsumfang als Menschen – was könnten wir von ihnen lernen, wenn wir innehalten würden, um zu lauschen?

Das Stück ist von der Überzeugung inspiriert, dass das Leben – und Überleben – im Zeitalter des Anthropozäns die radikale Erneuerung dominanter menschlicher Kultur erfordern wird. ‚In den Kehlen von Bäumen‘ schlägt eine Kultur vor, die darauf gründet, den nicht-menschlichen, verwurzelten Stimmen der Welt um uns empathisch zu lauschen.
